Frequently Asked Questions

What is a root canal?

Endodontic treatment is often called “root canal therapy” or a “root canal,” which is a procedure that can save a damaged or infected tooth from extraction. The procedure involves treating the tooth’s pulp and surrounding tissues. This procedure is quite common and historically remarkably successful.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

It is a misconception that endodontic treatment is painful. Museum District Endodontics offers anesthesia that numbs your tooth and allows you to remain comfortable during your procedure. If by chance you feel some discomfort, please let the doctor know so that the appropriate adjustments can be made.

How will my tooth feel after the treatment?

It might take a few days to return to feeling normal after a root canal. However, once you’re completely healed, you should no longer feel the same lingering pain you felt before your root canal. In a normal healing process, the first 2-3 days are associated with the greatest levels of inflammation. After that time period, the tooth and surrounding area will continue to heal.

Do I need a root canal even if my tooth does not hurt?

Not all teeth that require a root canal cause daily or lingering pain. If your general dentist recommends root canal therapy, schedule a consultation with Dr. Mitchell. He will provide you with his recommendations for saving your tooth.

Is a root canal my only option? Are there any alternatives?

Tooth extraction, which may be accompanied with implant therapy, is one alternative to endodontic treatment. However, if possible, we typically recommend root canal therapy to save your natural tooth. When a tooth is removed, it can cause your other teeth to shift, bone loss, and other complications.
